Description
The Karów Palace (often referred to locally as a castle) boasts a centuries-old history deeply tied to the geopolitical shifts of Lower Silesia. Its history can be summarized in four main phases:
- Origins and Noble Era (19th Century – 1945): The current Neoclassical building was erected in the 19th century on the foundations of an older manorial estate. It remained privately owned until the end of World War II. The last registered historical owners of the estate and its surrounding lands were Maria and Ernst August Urbanczyk.
- Post-War Period and Nationalization (1945): Following the shifting of Polish borders in 1945 and the rise of the communist regime, the German owners lost their rights, and the palace was confiscated by the Polish state.
- The State Agricultural Farm Period (Post-War – 1990s): the Karów Palace became the administrative headquarters of a State Agricultural Farm (PGR, Państwowe Gospodarstwo Rolne). Part of its interior rooms were converted into offices and service housing for employees and farmworkers.
- Definitive Abandonment (1990s – Present): With the collapse of the Soviet bloc and the subsequent liquidation of Polish state farms in the early 1990s, the building lost its function entirely. Having found no new buyers willing to restore it, the palace was boarded up and abandoned, leading to rapid structural decay and the eventual collapse of its internal ceilings.
